How to make Poster Glue

So this is a recipe for wheat-paste glue I got off a revolutionist website under techniques for anti government posters and stencils. So far I have found it works great but if you have a better one or an adaptation on this I would love to know.

Ingredients

Sugar

Flour

Water

Method

1st boil 3 cups water.

Next mix together in a separate bowl 1/4 cup of flour and 3/4 cup of water until it forms a nice white liquid. Try to get all the globs out as this will effect the consistency of the glue in the end.

Once the water is boiling add the flour water mix stirring immediately and continue to stir for 3 minutes.

The boiling water will cause the flour to foam if you do not stir and again effect the consistency of the glue. Remove from heat and stir in 1/2 cup of sugar

leave to cool

It said on the website I found this that it is good for a week but i have found that it is best to use a.s.a.p. Also try to give it a stir every once and a while while its cooling to stop it forming a thick skin on top.

  3. have you had any problems with the glue loosing its stick? if so, how long does it last?

  4. I have posters that have lasted up an entire year, glue holds well. Just make sure you use a lot of it.

  5. You said to use it ASAP...is it okay to say, make it in the morning, and use it in the afternoon? I'm thinking of making it before I go to school (5/6 AM) and taking it with me, to use around 12 hours later. Thanks for the tutorial!

  6. yeah thats fine to wait that long. it goes bad after a few days though so watch that. good luck!

  7. Will this recipe work for putting paper posters on street light, etc. while still keeping them secure and legible?

  8. Cheers for the recipe, my old recipe was crap. Hopefully this one works for me. :)

Just wondering... what kind of brush do you use?
I was told by a friend that my brush was too soft, I don't really have much trouble with it but I get creases, and I was thinking maybe a tougher brush would help...?

    Thanks again

  9. wiv other repipies i have used the glue leaves a brownish tint to the paper, does this one do that?

    ReplyDelete
  10. I use a broom to put it up, the softer the bristles the better in my opinion.

Doesn't make the paper brown dude.

    ReplyDelete
  19. not sure on the square footage. you might wanna just try it out and see. i tend to make a much larger batch for my posters

  20. Your paste-ups are fantastic! Great work! :-D

How about using wallpaper paste? Will it work?
Is it also possible to draw for example on a 1meter high paper, then scan it and print it in a bigger scale? Do you think it would look blurry then?

    ReplyDelete
  21. The scaling up will only blur depending on what resolution you scan it at. you could draw smaller images and scan them at high resolution so they do not blur. I have never used Wallpaper paste but i imagine it would work :)

  22. Snails Love to eat it the Posters though. but oh well it looks cool some or the time.

  23. First off thank you for the recipe. My dorm hallways are quite dreary and this helps alot.
I am having problem though with ink running off of the paper. Is there a special type of paper or way of preparing the image onto paper that prevents with. With large pieces the bleeding doesn't really matter but with the smaller pieces it really effects it. Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  24. try printing the images. if they are hand drawn scan them and print them. other than that i dont really know of a way to stop the running of ink. maybe try a spray on fixative to hold the ink, the likes that are used by artists who use a lot of charcoal could work.

  33. Thanks a bunch. I can't wait to try it out.
Will this work on cement and sidewalks?

  34. I tried a spray bottle, if you unscrew the nozzle thing it goes pretty good.

My best results with a squeezable reusable drink container.

main thing is... glue on the wall, paper on the glue, glue on the paper in that order. (I tried the other way to no avail...)

thanks heaps for this astoundingly simple yet effective recipe. tates good too!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Thanks a lot! Do you have any experience with added strength from wood glue ?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Wood glue or PVA works really well. make sure it dries clear though.

best not to boil in the kettle. a pot on the stove is easier to both use and clean.
